Conducting Whole Community Natural Disasters Risk & Vulnerability Assessments

EQUIPPING COMMUNITIES TO PLAN FOR NATURAL DISASTERS RISK

Extreme weather events are on the rise, becoming more
frequent, severe, and long-lasting. This makes it
challenging for communities to assess and manage risks
that are typically based on historical data. To prepare for
risks associated with natural disasters, we must
incorporate methods that leverage future projections
and their impacts throughout the community.

Is your community ready to address the impacts of
extreme weather events?

Course Overview

This course teaches the art and science of conducting a Community Natural Disasters Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, a critical tool for building resilient communities. Participants gain the tools to integrate extreme weather projections and products into a Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA). Participants learn to prioritize target capabilities while considering natural, technological, and human-caused hazards and their cascading effects. The course also emphasizes identifying and addressing the needs of all community segments, particularly focusing on socioeconomic strategies to conduct a Social Vulnerability Assessment, which is crucial for preparing communities with heightened vulnerability for disasters. By completing this course, participants gain the knowledge and skills to effectively identify extreme weather risks and their impact, enabling them to develop strategies to improve preparedness and enhance community resilience.
